Understanding and Resolving Anxiety
Anxiety is a fear-based response we may experience when facing uncertainty. People who feel anxious want to control an unpredictable future. While anxiety consumes a great deal of our energy, in reality, it resolves nothing.
The truth is - you can resolve your anxiety.
As a licensed psychologist, I use Transactional Analysis (TA) for treatment. A potent aspect of TA is understanding the roles of the ego states and the interplay with anxiety. Here are the ego states:
Parent Ego State
The parent ego state represents our childhood authority figures. Examples might be parents and teachers. We tend to internalize the messages we receive from them. When we feel loved and cared for, we become emotionally stable and have positive self-esteem. But, if we’re criticized or disapproved of, we can feel anxious and unsure of ourselves.
Adult Ego State
The adult ego state is rational, logical, and capable of problem-solving. This state operates in the present moment. It makes decisions based on facts. Accessing this ego state helps us challenge our irrational beliefs. When we learn how to solve our problems rationally, we resolve our anxiety.
Child Ego State
The child ego state stores the emotions and spontaneous reactions from childhood. This ego state may contribute to our anxiety if we have unresolved childhood trauma. Exploring our child ego state gives us insight into the underlying causes of our anxiety. By doing so, we can resolve the anxious feelings.
