Recognizing the Signs of Trauma
Trauma can be a deeply distressing event that often causes emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical wounds. Examples of trauma include physical or sexual abuse, military combat, loss or bereavement, and childhood trauma. Trauma can also develop from lower intensity events that consistently occur over time. Examples include childhood neglect, exposure to anger and yelling, bullying, daily experiences of discrimination, and chronic stress from work or school. The lasting impact of trauma can interfere with a person's daily functioning and negatively impact their quality of life.
Trauma can present itself in various ways, and the symptoms may differ depending on individual experiences. Here are some common signs of trauma:
Emotional Distress
intense feelings of fear, sadness, anger, or guilt
mood swings or emotional numbness
persistent feelings of anxiety or panic attacks
difficulty regulating emotions or experiencing sudden outbursts of emotion
Avoidance
avoiding people, places, or activities associated with the traumatic event
suppressing thoughts and memories related to the trauma
social withdrawal or isolation
Hyperarousal
hypervigilance or easily startled
difficulty concentrating or focusing
irritability or constantly feeling on edge
trouble sleeping or having nightmares
Physical Symptoms
headaches, stomachaches, or other unexplained physical complaints
fatigue or low energy levels
changes in appetite or weight
increased heart rate or shallow breathing
Cognitive Changes
intrusive thoughts or flashbacks of the traumatic event
difficulty making decisions or problem-solving
memory gaps or difficulty remembering details of the traumatic event
Behavior Changes
using drugs or alcohol to cope
engaging in risky behaviors or self-destructive actions
difficulties in interpersonal relationships, including conflict or a lack of trust
Reliving the Trauma
nightmares or flashbacks
intrusive memories or thoughts
emotional or physical reactions when remembering the traumatic event
