Recognizing the Signs of Trauma

Trauma can be a deeply distressing event that often causes emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical wounds. Examples of trauma include physical or sexual abuse, military combat, loss or bereavement, and childhood trauma. Trauma can also develop from lower intensity events that consistently occur over time. Examples include childhood neglect, exposure to anger and yelling, bullying, daily experiences of discrimination, and chronic stress from work or school. The lasting impact of trauma can interfere with a person's daily functioning and negatively impact their quality of life.

Trauma can present itself in various ways, and the symptoms may differ depending on individual experiences. Here are some common signs of trauma:

  • intense feelings of fear, sadness, anger, or guilt

  • mood swings or emotional numbness

  • persistent feelings of anxiety or panic attacks

  • difficulty regulating emotions or experiencing sudden outbursts of emotion

Avoidance

  • suppressing thoughts and memories related to the trauma

  • social withdrawal or isolation

Hyperarousal

  • hypervigilance or easily startled

  • difficulty concentrating or focusing

  • irritability or constantly feeling on edge

  • trouble sleeping or having nightmares

Physical Symptoms

  • headaches, stomachaches, or other unexplained physical complaints
